5 common tricks scammers use

Each day newsfeeds and channels carry reports about people getting scammed in some way or the other. The FTC received more than 2.8 million fraud reports in 2021, amounting to losses of more than $5.8 million. More often than not, those who think they won’t fall for scams are usually the victims. So if you want to protect yourself from scammers, here are five common tricks to recognize:

Free trials
This trick includes offers of free one-month trials of products or services, such as teeth whiteners and streaming platforms. All the scammers ask you to pay is a small amount when in reality, they hide the fine print that obligates users to pay a monthly fee. Further, canceling these subscriptions may also be an expensive process. So before signing up for such trials, ensure that you read the fine print and do not fall for testimonials on the site. A reputable company will usually let you cancel, get out of a contract, and negotiate a refund.

Influencer giveaways
Tons of influencers on video streaming platforms carefully curate content for their subscribers. Occasionally, they may even plan giveaways. But hundreds of scammers create similar profiles and add links to comments announcing free giveaways for the winners of a lucky draw. The scammer asks the alleged winners to pay for only the delivery fee of the giveaway. However, when they do, no prize is sent, and the unsuspecting subscriber loses money. As a workaround, you should ensure the influencer profile is verified and credible before participating in giveaways. Additionally, most influencers will never ask for a delivery fee if they create a giveaway.

Free Wi-Fi hotspot
People at an airport or cafe often use public Wi-Fi as it is free and works exceptionally well. However, scammers create sites that resemble legitimate free Wi-Fi providers. Any user who connects to this network may expose their banking, credit card, password, and other sensitive information. So you should check if your smart device does not automatically connect to these networks. Using a VPN may also help mask your system from hackers.

Scareware
Several people report seeing a pop-up that looks like a legitimate antivirus notification when they visit a website. The notification may indicate your system or antivirus software has detected viruses on the computer when in fact, it is part of a bigger ploy. If a user clicks on the link, the malware installs itself on the computer and pretends to remove viruses. Instead, it steals sensitive information that may result in the user losing money. The best way to avoid this is by closing the pop-up immediately without clicking links. Running a full system scan on a legitimate antivirus software may also help eliminate potential threats.

Fake products
People often shop from e-commerce websites for electronics and essentials. Unfortunately, scammers design websites that look exactly like official retail platforms. Following this, they offer a similar product at an unbelievably low price. The only problem is that when the user makes the payment, they receive an inferior product via delivery, with no means to return it or seek a refund. You should always look closely at the domain names of such pages and thoroughly read the reviews.

5 ways to use a smartwatch productively

Smartwatches have slowly but steadily become an essential accessory for smartphones. They have an estimated market revenue of $43.4 billion with over 173 million shipments worldwide. But although a lot of hype surrounds the smart wearable device, not everyone is aware of its full potential. The traditional watch replacement can do much more than tell you the time. Here are five innovative ways to make the best of your smartwatch. Use it as a convenient fitness tracker Most smartwatches can track daily activity, including counting the number of steps and distances covered in a day. This is made possible with the help of an embedded GPS system. The GPS tracks the route taken for running or walking and displays the miles covered on the screen. If your smartwatch does not have a GPS built-in, you can use the signal from a smartphone to track distances during exercise. Some advanced watches also help monitor calorie consumption and sleeping patterns. Turn it into your task manager Remember how we moved on from using paper to write down grocery lists to typing them on our smartphones? Today, many have gone a step further, using watches instead of their iPhones or mobile devices for the same. If your hands are occupied with bags at a grocery store, a simple glance at your wrist can help you view your notes, so you do not have to struggle to pull out your phone. Using third-party task management apps, you can also check reminders for meetings or events. This makes everyday tasks a lot easier and improves productivity. Use it for entertainment and infotainment With software becoming more advanced each year, manufacturers offer many downloadable applications on smartwatches. These include apps to check social media, listen to music, watch the news, play games, and more. The benefit of doing this on a watch is that you no longer have to carry your smartphone all the time. You can check airplane timings and weather forecasts directly from the wearable. But ensure to pick a watch from popular brands, such as the Apple Watch, which has a curated third-party app store for that specific watch. Explore it for communication Smartwatches work as excellent tools for communication. You can use them to check when the next office meeting is scheduled, read and reply to messages with pre-programmed phrases, and send emojis from a curated library. Some models have a T9-style keyboard. While typing on them might take longer, it is a great way to send custom messages via the watch. These tiny devices can also be utilized to accept or reject calls. Some advanced options have a speaker and microphone to communicate with the caller without requiring you to pull out the phone from your pocket. Use it as a wearable mobile wallet Digital payments have made life much easier for many. They help track expenses, even if it were a couple of dollars. Instead of smartphones, many have started using smartwatches as mobile wallets. With third-party apps on select wearables, you can use them to pay for public transportation, store purchases, and other expenses with ease. Not all smartwatch manufacturers offer the benefits mentioned above. So, to get the best out of the wearable, we recommend buying from the top brands in the market. One renowned manufacturer is Apple. The brand launched the Apple Watch Series 8 on September 7, 2022, which was available in stores from September 16, 2022. It is equipped with advanced sensors that can analyze specific health patterns, such as body temperature and REM, and offer insights to improve overall well-being. Furthermore, a new crash detection feature can contact emergency services on detecting a crash or hard fall. The Apple Watch Series 8 starts at $399 for the GPS model and $499 for the GPS + Cellular variant.

5 social media mistakes every user should avoid

Social media is both a boon and a curse. On one hand, the world has become a smaller place, with global outreach made possible by posting on social media. But on the other hand, it’s also a dangerously strong habit to form and even more difficult to shake off once you get hooked. You must also pay attention to what you’re posting, especially when something is viral or trending. Here are five common social media mistakes to avoid consciously. Using every app and platform Teens and older adults spend a couple of hours on average using apps like Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp, among the popular favorites. But one of the biggest social media mistakes is having an account on every platform. Remember, the number of accounts you use is directly proportional to the time spent on them daily. More accounts, more time spent from posting to replying and managing your profile. It’s a time-draining process and can be detrimental to cognitive health and psychological well-being. Deactivate your accounts from apps you don’t use actively to save time and effort. Divert your energy to do something productive. Posting about personal things Some things need to be kept out of the social worldview to ensure there is no misinformation or negative impact on your posts. It is never a good idea to post about personal matters that pertain to relationships, family, and close friends. Even if there are forums and platforms commenting on topics that gain virality on social media, it’s best to avoid posting anything that can trigger a controversial debate. Think carefully before posting something, and use your discretion.  Uploading the same content across platforms If you use more than a few apps for promotional purposes, ensure you post unique content on each platform. Don’t simply recycle the reel from your Instagram feed and post it for YouTube shorts as well. Avid followers pay attention and will post critical feedback if they notice slacking. Remember, unique content helps improve virality and keeps users engaged. This applies to your personal accounts, creator accounts, and even business accounts on apps like Instagram. Even if you are cross-posting some of the content already used on one app, re-edit the original using the other app’s features so it’s not just another repeated post. Not updating the apps It is always a good idea to keep your apps up to date. Companies roll out new features with each update, and some of these rollouts are essential for improving app security. Don’t use apps excessively without updating them. You will miss out on a number of features that might come in extremely handy for personal and promotional purposes. For example, social media marketing is one of the best ways to create brand awareness and do an outreach program to engage with your target audience. Updated apps let you use new and innovative features for making reels and posts and using templates to generate engaging content. Focusing on quantity uploads Content connoisseurs want quality original reels, shorts, and posts. So don’t just flood your timeline with back-to-back posts without paying attention to the quality. Focus on making engaging content regularly and uploading it on a planned schedule. This way, your posts will get more engagement as users will log in around that time to check out the latest content.

Foods to avoid for managing bronchitis

Foods to avoid for managing bronchitis

Bronchitis is a lung condition in which the lining of the bronchial tubes, which are responsible for transporting air to and from the lungs, gets inflamed. The condition can be chronic or acute and can develop as a result of an underlying respiratory condition or a cold. Certain foods can also trigger the condition and cause the symptoms to worsen. Here are some foods to avoid when diagnosed with bronchitis. Dairy products People suffering from chronic bronchitis need to limit their intake of dairy products. When digested, these items release a compound known as casomorphin, which is known to elevate the amount of phlegm and mucus released by the body. This can lead to severe coughing, which could worsen wheezing and pain in patients suffering from the disease. Instead of dairy products, you can opt for alternatives such as almond or soy milk. Excess salt Excess salt can be extremely harmful to patients suffering from the disease because too much sodium can cause water retention in the body leading to difficulty breathing. To season your food, it is essential to opt for low-sodium salt alternatives, as suggested by a nutritionist, to counteract any harmful effects on the body. It is also essential to keep an eye on labels about the amount of salt present in snacks and processed foods.
